Plumbing issues have a way of making themselves known at the worst possible times — a dripping tap keeping you awake at night, a blocked drain on the morning of an important day. While serious plumbing work should always be left to a licensed plumber, many common problems can be tackled safely with basic tools and a bit of know-how.
Fixing a Dripping Tap
A dripping tap is almost always caused by a worn washer or O-ring. Turn off the water supply valve under the sink, remove the tap handle (usually secured by a screw under the decorative cap), and replace the rubber washer at the base of the tap cartridge. This is one of the simplest and most satisfying DIY plumbing repairs, and it can save hundreds of litres of water per year.
Clearing a Blocked Drain
Before reaching for harsh chemical drain cleaners, try the physical approach first. A plunger is often highly effective for sink and shower blockages. For deeper clogs, a drain snake or plumber’s auger can reach further into the pipe. Hot water poured slowly down the drain can also help dissolve soap and grease buildup.
Fixing a Running Toilet
A constantly running toilet is surprisingly wasteful, adding hundreds of dollars to your water bill annually. Lift the lid off the cistern and check the flapper — the rubber seal at the bottom. If it’s warped or worn, it’s not sealing properly and needs replacing. Most hardware stores carry universal replacement flappers for under $10.
Low Water Pressure
Low water pressure in a single tap usually points to a blocked aerator — the small mesh screen at the tap’s spout. Unscrew it, soak it in vinegar for an hour to dissolve mineral buildup, and reattach it. If pressure is low throughout the house, the issue is likely with your mains supply and worth a call to your plumber.
When to Call a Professional
Any work involving your hot water system, gas lines, or internal pipes within walls should always be handled by a licensed professional. DIY plumbing on these systems can void warranties, create safety hazards, and even violate building codes.
